Standard Tuning

All case parts removed from the piano are placed on a padded blanket. Minor pitch corrections are performed first, then the piano is meticulously tuned in equal or an historical temperament to the concert pitch of A-440 unless otherwise requested. A standard tuning is recommended every 6 months for the average home piano at a cost of $175 plus GST for tunings in the Calgary Metropolitan area, with a $10 -$30 surcharge for tunings outside the service area (High River, Strathmore, Canmore, Red Deer and Lethbridge). Many conscientious piano owners will schedule a standard tuning three or more times a year to keep it in excellent tune. A $10 discount is applied on multiple pianos at the same location. Tunings generally take about an hour and a half to perform. The fee for a tuning also covers adjustment of the pedals, minor repairs, removal of squeaks in the pedals and other minor adjustments to make your piano playing more enjoyable.

Every piano that is serviced gets a “Piano Service Record Card”. The tuning date, services provided and the temperature and humidity (Rh) are recorded. While we keep track of all this in the office And is available on my phone, you will have your own record so you’ll know exactly when the piano was last serviced and what the temperature and Rh was at the time

When a piano has not been tuned often enough, has been moved or is subject to extreme temperature and humidity changes, a pitch correction may be required before a fine tuning can be performed. This is absolutely required if the piano is more than an average of 8 cents (8/100ths of a semitone) flat or sharp. Pitch corrections add $60 (plus GST) to the cost of a regular tuning.

The PTG has an excellent service bulletin on pitch correction which can be viewed by following this link and selecting “Resources” and “Piano Care”.
