The Unofficial IRC #Pianotech Archives The following files have been uploaded and discussed on the Starlink IRC channel #pianotech. Directories under musselwhite.com/pub/pianos may refer to active discussions. The channel is open every Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Brinsmeade1.jpg Shot of a "tropicalized" Brinsmeade piano. Each piece of leather and felt in the action and keys is either sewn or nailed in place in addition to glued. All ribs are held with brass screws from the front of the board. Brinsmeade2.jpg Tuning wrench and screw sitting on the keys. Strings are friction-fit into the tuning screws so knots aren't required. Note the nails on the fronts of the "waterfall" keytops. Brinsmeade3.jpg Very out of focus shot of the action Brinsmeade4.jpg Treble end. I apologize for the focus on these. Brinsmeade5.jpg Shows the tuning screws and the action. fire jpg Newspaper article re: Fire at Pianos by Rosch fire01 jpg Close-up of destroyed 1885 Steinway E from above fire i-beam jpg Jon Page - glueing the extensions on a bass bridge ribpress.jpg Jon Page - Rib press kcrash jpg Newspaper article re: Car crashing through Calgary Kawai Dealer's window. rhap01 jpg John Musselwhite playing the Steinway® Rhapsody 7' piano rhap02 jpg The Rhapsody on display at Irene Besse Keyboards in Calgary rhap03 jpg The Rhapsody again rhap05 jpg The Rhapsody's plate and strings from the piano's tail horowitz.jpg Vladimir Horowitz' Steinway D from the keyboard sundae jpg Sundae Sound Recording Studio in Calgary. This may not be entirely fair as #1 is a white or natural while #2 is the sharp just above it. It may be that one of these was played more than the other just due to the nature of being either a sharp or a natural. I did NOT scan the entire shank as the shank isn't the item of interest, but rather the knuckle attached to it. The number of the shank is clearly visable in the scan. What I DO know is that the leather covered knuckle is a lot flatter than the all felt knuckle. (JF) felt_knuckles2.jpg Pics of the knuckles with ruler. Dimensions measured with dial calipers are as follows: Knuckle #1 bottom of knuckle to bottom of shank: 9.5mm front to back of knuckle ( along shank line measured at widest point): 10.4mm Knuckle #2 bottom of knuckle to bottom of shank: 10.3mm front to back as in knuckle #1: 10.5mm It is NOT an illusion that the felt on knuckle #2 appears to be mounted "off center" relative to the wood core as there definitely IS more felt on the flange side than on the hammer side. Core face to shank side: 4.4mm Core face to hammer side: 3.7mm That's right - 0.7mm difference (JF) All files in the musselwhite.com/pub directories are part of on-going discussions in the Starlink #pianotech IRC channel and the PTG Pianotech Mailing List and are for educational use only.
